Class DIVIDERS: Book Introduction

Class Dividers

The Unintended Side Effects of the Coronavirus Era on School

Introduction

March 15th, 2022

Two years ago this week we were told, staff and students, that we needed to go home for two weeks in order to #flattenthecurve. Nothing could have been further from the truth. What we got instead was a two-year educational nightmare guided by self-aggrandizing charlatans from the Corporate Press, Public Health officials, Public Education officials, Government, and newly minted ‘Karens’. The Laptop Class, those wealthy folks who not only have jobs where they can stay home on the couch but are also well paid, helped this two-year long social disaster along by shaming people who pointed out statistical inconsistencies, went against the Mainstream Narrative, or simply asked good questions. All of them are guilty parties.

One of the many things not reported in the Corporate Press was the effect these policies had on students in a neighborhood like the one where I work. I work in Mt. Vernon, NY in Mount Vernon High School, in the African American neighborhood. The entire high school qualifies for free lunch. During this time my students were rendered invisible. Their struggles have been ignored.

I am writing this now because the aftershocks are not only still being felt, they will be with us for a long time. These young adults’ stories will never be heard unless they are recorded. Even as I write this, the egregious missteps are being forgotten and / or whitewashed. The level of educational carnage left in the wake of the Novel Coronavirus Era is astounding. In this book you will see some of the things for which I had a front row seat these past two years. Almost all of it is negative. Perhaps this will have an effect in stopping the next time the people who rule over us decide to ruin children’s lives.

I hope so.
