Exploring major literary Themes.

The Trojan War has ended. Now it's time for the trip home. (Here is an interactive map of the Journey).

Because he figured out how to defeat the Trojans, Odysseus is seen as a Hero. In literature, he is an example of a hero from classical times, talked about throughout the ages.

This is one of the major things to discuss throughout the story - the concept of a hero.

The Trojan War - A Short Look

Thematic analysis of the Homeric Epic.

The first part of this Epic is the 10 year long Trojan War. Odysseus was the hero of the Trojan War. He had the brilliant idea to trick the Trojans with the gigantic horse - a "gift" that was really a way to get into the city. The whole story is called "The Iliiad".

The Trojan Horse trick ended the war. Odysseus was celebrated for using his intellect to end the war. They'd tried to get into the city for 10 years and failed. After their victory, Odysseus spends years trying to get home. That journey is "The Odyssey".

Please watch the following video, and answer these 2 short questions (20 points):

1. How did the war begin - what was it based on?
2. How did it end? Describe the trick that enabled the Greeks to get into the city.

How are ancient Epic Poems relevant today?

'The Odyssey' is an Epic Poem that is thousands of years old. It explores philosophical questions about ourselves. It is a bunch of adventures within a man's journey home.

After fighting for 10 years in the Trojan War, Odysseus and his crew have to get home. It takes them 10 years. This journey is that story.

Question for the day (10 points):

• Why do you think a 5000 year old story of a journey home is still read today? What must it be about to still be relevant today?

Introduction to Greek Myths and Gods - Continued

Today we will look at the second half of the introductory video. Pay particular attention to the imagery they place with the explanations. This video has chosen some of the best depictions of the Gods and their stories that exist. It's well done, and if you're into mythology, you might consider looking through the channel even further.

Please watch from 5:42 to the end and answer the following:

1. Who was Athena and what was named after her? (5:42)
2. Who was the God of War and what did he do that wasn't so good? (6:57)
3. Who caused the Trojan War and how did it start? Explain the jealous relationships involved. (8:00)
4. At the end of the video the narrataor says that the Greek Gods represent humanity at is "finest and at its worst". Do you agree with him? Explain.
